The armed conflict has led to what has been described as an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Since the eruption of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, tens of thousands have been killed, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. Yet, despite the scale of suffering, the conflict remains largely ignored by the international community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entisar Abdelsadig captures this frustration: “In Sudan, there is a general feeling that the conflict has been forgotten by the international community. This is evident in details \u2013 such as the limited number of emergency visas issued to Sudanese citizens by European states, especially when compared to those granted to Ukrainians. To some extent, this is understandable; the war in Ukraine feels like a more immediate threat to European states which makes it seem more relevant.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conflict is oversimplified<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Entisar, another reason for this neglect is the way the conflict is often oversimplified: “People see it as just two generals fighting for power. But that is only a fraction of the truth. The war is deeply rooted in Sudan\u2019s complex history, unresolved conflicts, and structural divisions. While the rivalry between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces triggered the violence, local armed groups have also entered the fray, exacerbating an already fragile situation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n She believes that increased global attention could make a real difference: “If public pressure on all parties to the conflict increased, they would be shamed for their actions by both regional and international actors. This could lead to a reduction in violence, as perpetrators would know they could be held accountable by the International Criminal Court.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peacebuilding in the shadow of war<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n While the world\u2019s focus is elsewhere, what remains even more invisible than the war itself is the ongoing peace work led by women. PeaceWomen Across the Globe\u2019s partner Badya Centre offers one example. The NGO that trains and counsels women peacebuilders in Dilling, South Kordofan. Despite the city being besieged on all three main roads, women continue to negotiate local ceasefires so they can gather firewood and tend their farms. They are establishing peace markets, enabling trade while also fostering fragile but vital trust between different armed actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “These are the people who build peace every day,”<\/em> Entisar says. Global solidarity strengthens the resilience of the Sudanese people, including at the local level. “The people of Sudan are living a nightmare. It is often underestimated how much it means to know that we are still part of the world, part of humanity.
