There is an indirect but significant relationship between the scarcity of natural resources and violent conflicts in countries where Fondation Hirondelle is active. Independent media sources play an important role by providing a space for dialog. They make it possible to discuss, debate, and bring discussions to life and therefore contribute to maintaining relations between conflicting parties. Coverage of issues relating to resource management by the media makes it possible to question officials and drive them to take political responsibility. Local media sources not only impart theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to their audience but also allow them to voice their concerns and make them heard. Sometimes even putting them on the political agenda.

Fondation Hirondelle interviewed its media partner in Pakistan and a member of its radio station in Niger:

Said Nazir / Director of Tribal News Network (TNN) – Pakistan

How do you see the role of the media in managing natural resources?

The media is instrumental in resolving conflicts by providing a platform for dialog and a space to work towards resolution. In a country like Pakistan, where these platforms are dominated by fighters and powerful state and anti-state representatives, the media must focus on the human element and the cost of these conflicts, demanding redress and accountability, and making voices that facilitate building peace heard. By letting stakeholders’ voices be heard and involving government officials, environmentalists, community leaders, civil servants and the public, sustainable natural resource management can become a reality.

This is our network’s raison d’être: our coverage enables the voices of communities to be heard in a conflict that increasingly seeks to silence people. TNN offers all stakeholders a platform for dialog, enabling them to express their opinions and make collective decisions on the responsible use of natural resources and the protection of the environment. TNN holds those in power accountable for their actions by educating both decision makers and the general public on the importance of sustainable resource management for long-term peace and stability.

How do you approach the subject of natural resource management on-air?

Improving relations between the scientific and journalistic worlds is a top priority for Fondation Hirondelle. We dedicate a weekly magazine to environmental and natural resource issues, and offer our listeners forums and interactive debates.

By giving citizens the opportunity to express themselves on issues of governance, access to land and management of natural resources, we are giving people the tools to defend their rights and to engage individually or as one on resource management issues.
