The Psychosocial Approach – An Essential Aspect of The Triple Nexus

In this June edition of à propos, KOFF members share their insights, expertise, and experiences on the triple nexus, a framework that calls for greater coherence and positive impact among the three pillars of international cooperation: humanitarian aid, development cooperation, and peacebuilding.
Although discussions on linking humanitarian and development efforts date back to the 1980s (Singer, 1985, 13), the approach was formally reframed as the triple nexus during the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016 (UNSG, 2016). This shift responded to the recognition that humanitarian crises, development issues, and violent conflict are interconnected. The triple nexus aims to foster coordinated strategies, pooled funding, and inclusive partnerships with both local and international stakeholders across all three pillars.
For many KOFF members, the triple nexus is no longer just a theoretical construct. It now informs their organizations’ planning and programming. Nonetheless, significant challenges remain, particularly regarding the integration of the peace component. Contributors highlight ongoing difficulties with coordination and prioritization, limited staff capacity, and increasing funding constraints. These obstacles underscore the complexity of further putting the triple nexus into practice and point to the need for continued critical reflection and institutional learning, efforts to which this edition of à propos seeks to contribute.

I wish you a pleasant read.
