CAMBODIA: ELECTIONS AND VIOLENCE

Cambodia held parliamentary elections on July 29, 2018. Any opposition was stifled beforehand. The victory of the Cambodian People’s Party was therefore hardly surprising. Is Cambodia now heading towards a one-party system? What impact does this election have on tensions within the country? To what extent are elections and violence connected in a general sense and how can riots be prevented? Are there technological solutions that can make elections fairer and thus more peaceful in future?

CIVIL SOCIETY REPORT ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE 2030 AGENDA IN SWITZERLAND

On 3 July 2018, at a press conference civil society announced the publication of their country report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Switzerland. Chapter 11 (p. 58) of the report is dedicated to SDG 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”. On 20 June, Switzerland published the official country report on the matter.

KOFF ANNUAL ASSEMBLY

At the KOFF annual assembly, three speakers initiated the discussions on the Agenda 2030, and particularly on the Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) on just and peaceful societies. Maja Messmer (Human Security Division at the FDFA), Martin Roch (conflict and human rights network at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation) and Peter Hug (Social Democrats Switzerland) provided insights into the opportunities and limitations of SDG implementation in Swiss government, parliament and society.
